Ivermectin

COMPOSITION

• Biomec 6 mg Tablet: Each film-coated tablet contains Ivermectin BP 6 mg.
• Biomec 12 mg Tablet: Each film-coated tablet contains Ivermectin BP 12 mg.

DESCRIPTION
Biomec (Ivermectin) is an emerging oral antiscabietic that is as safe and effective as the topical antiscabietics. It is a selective anti-parasitic agent due to high affinity for glutamate-gated chloride ion channels found in the peripheral nervous system and muscle cells of parasites. The binding of Ivermectin to this ion channel results in increased permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions, leading to hyperpolarization with subsequent paralysis and death of the parasites. It may also impair the normal intrauterine development of parasites and may inhibit their release from the uteri of gravid female parasites.

INDICATION
Ivermectin is used in the treatment of Scabies caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, Filariasis caused by Wuchereria bancrofti (Lymphatic filariasis). It is also used in the treatment of Pediculosis (head lice) and onchocerciasis. Strongyloidosis and Trichuriasis. 

DOSE & ADMINISTRATION

• For Scabies, Strongyloidosis & Head Lice: 200 mcg l kg 
• Ivermectin (Biomec) should be administered as a single dose with a full glass (240 ml) of water on an empty stomach (1 hour before breakfast). Safety and efficacy have not been established for children less than 15 kg or below 5 years.

CONTRAINDICATION

• It is contraindicated in bronchial asthma. It is also contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any component of this product.

PRECAUTION

• Stop taking Ivermectin and seek emergency medical attention if you experience symptoms of a rare but serious allergic reaction including swelling of the lips, tongue, or face.

SIDE EFFECTS

• Common side effects are nausea. vomiting or decreased appetite, diarrhoea or constipation, muscle or joint pain, swelling of the lymph nodes, fever, tiredness, dizziness, tremor. itching, eyelid swelling, or eye redness.

USE IN SPECIAL POPULATION

• Safety and efficacy have not been established for pregnant or lactating women.

DRUG INTERACTION

• Concomitant use of Ivermectin with Diazepam and related Tranquilizers as well as any Monoamine Oxidase (MAO) inhibitors exaggerated the sedation and adverse neurologic effects.

STORAGE

• Store in a cool and dry place, protect from light and moisture. Store at 25⁰C. Keep out of the reach of children.
